Ask about a termination kit

Before the enquiry is written: the heat-shrink termination kits referenced across this site run from 1.1 kV to 36 kV and stop there. There is no 66 kV cable termination kit, whatever this domain is called — the only 66 kV item the manufacturer publishes is a busbar sleeve, which is not a cable accessory. What that means, and what to ask instead.

Put these ten lines in the message

In the order a kit is specified. Whatever is missing here is what the reply has to ask for; the next section says why each one moves the answer.

  • Cable insulation — XLPE, EPR, PVC or PILC
  • Core count — 1, 2, 3, 3½ or 4
  • Conductor cross-section in mm²
  • System voltage and Umax in kV, both stated
  • Indoor or outdoor
  • Armoured or unarmoured
  • Sector-shaped or circular conductor
  • Bushing type and its standard, where the cable lands inside switchgear
  • Lug bore and palm drilling, to suit the stud it bolts onto
  • How many terminations, and how many are held as spares

Why each line changes the answer

Cable insulation
XLPE and EPR route to GXO/E; PILC routes to GPO/E, which adds an oil barrier sleeve, a belting oil barrier sleeve, glass cushion tape and an earthing plumb the extruded kit has no use for.
Core count
GLT-1100 covers 1, 2, 3, 3½ and 4-core in one family at 1.1 and 3.3 kV. Above that, three-core and single-core are separate series — GXO/E against GXOS/E — so the count is a catalogue branch, not a variant.
Conductor cross-section
The code is picked on it. At 24 kV, GXO-21 to GXO-24 span 16 to 400 mm² for extruded cable and GPO-21 to GPO-24 span 25 to 500 mm² for paper: the bands differ by construction as well as by class.
System voltage and Umax
Kits are catalogued against the highest system voltage. GXO/E-1524 carries 8.7/15 kV, 11/11 kV and 12.7/22 kV cable under one Umax of 24 kV, so a cable rating quoted alone leaves the class open.
Indoor or outdoor
GXO-21 to -24 outdoor against GXE-21 to -24 indoor. Indoor GXO/E kits ship without rain sheds; indoor GPO/E kits still carry one shed per core. The difference in full.
Armoured or unarmoured
Armour decides what is bonded. GLT-1100 is catalogued for both and packs a jubilee clamp with tinned copper earth braid; GPO/E kits add an earthing plumb between lead sheath and armour.
Conductor shape
The published codes are banded on cross-section alone and say nothing about sector-shaped cores. The lug is what is at risk, so state the shape rather than let it be assumed.
Bushing type
Land in switchgear and the interface becomes the specification. Screened separable connectors mate with type C bushings to EN 50180 and EN 50181; a heat-shrink kit ends on a lug and does not. Separable connectors.
Lug bore and drilling
A terminal lug is a packed item in GLT-1100 and the GPO/E kits, with lug sealing mastic beside it. Bore and drilling follow the equipment stud, which the cable size does not give.
Quantity
Count cable ends rather than cores — one three-core kit terminates one end of one cable — and name spares separately.

What can be settled before the enquiry goes out is the series and the code. The kit hub maps construction and voltage class onto GLT, GXO/E, GXOS/E and GPO/E. Not published — ask the manufacturer

Three things an enquiry commonly needs that no published document supplies. Office hours against the Mumbai numbers. Any pollution-class mapping, which is what would decide how many rain sheds a site wants. And conductor-shape guidance, since the codes are banded on cross-section only. All three fit in one reply. A fourth is half-answered rather than missing: the standards behind "Class I" are published — IEC 60502-4 and CENELEC HD 629.1 — but the class itself is defined nowhere, so ask what it grades.

Name the code, not the voltage

An enquiry that says GXO-23, 3-core, 240 mm², outdoor is answered once. An enquiry that says an 11 kV termination is answered with the ten questions above.
